Area code 623 is a telephone area code serving the westside of the Phoenix metropolitan area in Arizona, including cities such as Glendale, Peoria, Sun City, Surprise, and Goodyear. It was created in 1999 as an overlay to area code 602. The area code covers Maricopa County, the most populous county in Arizona. With the rapid growth of the Phoenix area in recent years, area code 623 has become increasingly congested, leading to the need for additional area codes in the region.
